How long do trends last these days?
I feel like the second I catch up to the latest fashion, technology, food, or home decor trends they are suddenly “not cool” anymore. Or worse, the trend's allure is squeezed dry and overdone to the point where I end up sick of it after investing in it. While by no means do we have to follow trends to stay “relevant,” it can sometimes feel almost impossible to escape. This dreadful feeling is exponentially worse with the assistance of social media. Seeing what everyone else is wearing, doing, and eating can be exhausting. I easily find myself getting sucked into the black hole that is comparing myself to people online.
To pull myself back into reality, I try to remember that there is that there is a science behind this! Companies and experts tap into this human desire to connect with the intent of making a profit from our need for a sense of community. I applaud those who have cracked the science behind marketing because it works! I mean just look at any thrift store these days, they are riddled with lightly worn fast fashion brands like “SHEIN” and “H&M” AND customers are still buying new items every day from these same brands in the newest styles. It is shocking to see a brand have equally not wanted and strongly desired products. That shows how quickly these trends cycle. I mean, just take Heidi Klum’s advice, “In fashion, one day you’re in and the next day you’re out,” as she famously said on Project Runway.
Unfortunately, Heidi is right outside of just fashion as well. I can envision in my childhood home a “craft closet” in my storage room filled with attempted hobbies left for the dust bunnies. Or the ankle weights and specialized workout equipment seeing no action in my garage that I swore were going to “change my life.” While it is okay to make mistakes and regret purchases, the Green Scene is here to help you reduce the urge to purchase on ambition, and instead, guide you to a more sustainable option.
